Agriculture & Farming in Sigatoka

Agriculture in Fiji is one of the major income earners in Fiji, second only to tourism. Sigatoka moreover, is fortunate to be having both these industries present. However, this section will briefly look at agriculture in Sigatoka, in the province of Nadroga/Navosa.

Sigatoka is often referred to as the “Salad Bowl of Fiji”. An apt name as it is the major supplier of fruits & vegetables to majority of the Hotels in the Coral Coast and to all major municipal markets in Fiji.

Cash Crop Farming is the most common form of farming practiced in Sigatoka, along with subsistence farming, livestock farming and seasonal sugarcane farming.  After the destruction of the Old Sigatoka Bridge, the tram line connecting the sugarcane farmers of Kavanagasau Road & Olosara was broken as well. This led to these sugarcane farmers to turn to cash crop farming as a source of income, contributing to the increase in Cash Crop Farming.

In Fiji, the agriculture sector is looked after by the Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI). Sigatoka has two offices: one located in the main town of sigatoka, along Lawaqa road and is largely responsible for livestock farming, consisting also of a Veterinary Clinic; and one in Nacocolevu, Valley Road Sigatoka, largely responsible for looking after the cash crop farming, seeds, and assistance to farmers in supplying of seeds and plants.
